Today, I give thanks for tradition.
I was saddened the other day, as I noticed a young girl who lives across the street from us who wouldn't be joining the other trick-or-treaters on Halloween. She's 5, and lives with her father and grandmother. She watched from her driveway as scores of children fled down the street toward the elementary school to participate in trunk-or-treat. In an effort to include her, I called out to her and invited her to come trick-or-treat at our home. Unfortunately, her grandmother said she had more than enough.
Afterward, I took pride in the fact that I go out of my way to ensure that my children grow up with tradition. The tooth fairy visits the believers after each tooth has fallen from their mouth. They're adorned in costumes every October 31st, and paraded around to people's homes to beg for sugary treats. Each Thanksgiving, we provide a feast (or attend one) and enjoy the love of family. When Christmas comes, we decorate wholeheartedly and the magic of Santa provides. There are birthday celebrations, homecoming festivities, Mother's Days and Father's Days... and I'm so blessed and thankful to have not only been a part of all of these as a child - but to be able to introduce them to and celebrate them with our children as well.
