Pompeii and Vesuvius

Back to blogging about our Italian vacation...

After conquering Rome, and bathing in all that was AWESOME in the Vatican, etc.... well, Pompeii and Vesuvius were definitely not the highlight of the trip.

I thought it would be cool to say I've hiked to the top of a volcano (but I'm going to confess and let you know that we drove as far as we could, and only hiked about 1-2k to the top. It was still grueling! I had a 26 lb 2 yr old on my back. I was wearing my vibram's, without socks, and walking in lava dust (BAD BAD idea!) I had nasty, sweaty lava dust all in between my toes inside my shoes. UGH!

I was excited to see the inside of a volcano. I was more than disappointed to see that it was just a pile of rocks. (copy -next time, visit an active one if you want to see lava bubbling.) It was hot. REALLY hot. Sweat was pouring down between myself and Victoria. Ava was whining all the way to the top about how her legs hurt (yet she had no problems on the way down... hmm, wonder why that is??)

Here, I'll stop whining. Have some pictures:

Somewhere down there, Pompeii...
The inside of Vesuvius... disappointing huh?

I was kind of bummed by Pompeii too. I only saw three of the plaster body things, and my morbid curiosity wanted to experience so much more. We walked around aimlessly, because my "awesome" husband didn't think to get a map when he paid our way in. SO, we basically spent a couple hours in a ghost town, feeling sorry for the people we didn't get to see because they suffered such a terrible tragedy. It wasn't stroller friendly either - darn cobblestone roads. Romans... oy!

More pictures:

the Mosaic tile floors were really impressive!

seriously not stroller friendly...
